Each packing of R d by translates of the unit cube [0, 1) d admits a decomposition into at most two parts such that if a translate of the unit cube is covered by one of them, then it also belongs to such a part. Let I = [0, 1) d , and S ⊂ R d be a non-empty set. We say that the set I + S = {I + s : s ∈ S} is a packing of R d by (half-open) unit cubes if the members of I + S are pairwise disjoin...

Cube packings, second moment and holes

We consider tilings and packings of R by integral translates of cubes [0, 2[, which are 4Z-periodic. Such cube packings can be described by cliques of an associated graph, which allow us to classify them in dimension d ≤ 4. For higher dimension, we use random methods for generating some examples. Such a cube packing is called non-extendible if we cannot insert a cube in the complement of the pa...

Non-rigidity of Spherical Inversive Distance Circle Packings

We give a counterexample of Bowers-Stephenson's conjecture in the spherical case: spherical inversive distance circle packings are not determined by their inversive distances.

Which Chessboards have a Closed Knight's Tour within the Cube?

A closed knight’s tour of a chessboard uses legal moves of the knight to visit every square exactly once and return to its starting position. When the chessboard is translated into graph theoretic terms the question is transformed into the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle. There are two common tours to consider on the cube. One is to tour the six exterior n × n boards that form the cube. The ot...

A Discrete Approach to the Poincare-Miranda Theorem

The Poincaré-Miranda Theorem is a topological result about the existence of a zero of a function under particular boundary conditions. In this thesis, we explore proofs of the Poincaré-Miranda Theorem that are discrete in nature that is, they prove a continuous result using an intermediate lemma about discrete objects. We explain a proof by Tkacz and Turzański that proves the Poincaré-Miranda T...
